Diagnostic ultrasound examinations, also known as sonograms, are non-invasive medical procedures that use high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the internal body. These examinations provide detailed information about anatomical structures, allowing doctors to assess organs, tissues, blood vessels and more. The main objective of ultrasound examinations is to obtain accurate diagnoses, assess pathological conditions and monitor the progress of diseases.
During the ultrasound examination, a specialised technician (sonographer) applies a gel to the skin and moves an ultrasound probe over the area to be examined. The sound waves sent by the probe create images displayed on a screen, allowing doctors to assess the structure, size and shape of organs or tissues. Ultrasound can be used to study many parts of the body, including the heart, liver, kidneys, thyroid, blood vessels and the foetus during pregnancy.
Ultrasound examinations are often used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, such as kidney stones, ovarian cysts, tumours, aneurysms, congenital heart problems and more. Ultrasound is also used to monitor the progression of chronic diseases, assess blood flow and guide invasive procedures such as biopsies or aspirations.
Diagnostic ultrasound examinations aim to provide precise and detailed images of body structures, enabling doctors to make accurate diagnoses and assess patients' health. They are safe, non-invasive procedures that do not involve ionising radiation. Ultrasound scans can reveal valuable information about the state of health, enabling doctors to take appropriate treatment and monitor patients' progress over time. Ultrasound examinations are an essential tool for early diagnosis, disease management and improving the overall well-being of patients.
